Super slim design & stunning touchscreen display
If you're like me and your laptop is your main workspace, then the Lenovo ThinkPad x280 is an essential addition to your toolkit. With it's super thin design (12.1 x 8.3 x 0.7 inches) and weighing just 2.98 lbs. this laptop does not scrimp on features.
The x280 is available in 2 models, touch screen and non-touch, with the main difference between the two (aside from the obvious) is that the touchscreen version comes with a glass fiber-reinforced lid while the non-touch features a carbon-fiber lid. Being a content marketer and web designer, I find the touch screen to be a must-have for my projects.
Connections & Ports
If ports are a concern for you, then the x280 should keep you happy with (2) Two 3.0 USB ports, a kensington lock slot, USB Type-C Port, Thunderbolt-3 Port, HDMI out, audio jack, and an optional Smart Card Reader. There's also a proprietary Ethernet port which requires a separately available dongle that along with the thunderbolt-3 port connects to lenovo's side-mounted docking stations.
Durability & Security Features
As with all ThinkPads, the x280 is built to take a licking. It passes MIL-SPEC durability tests for extreme temperatures, dust, shock, and other types of abuse. Bottom line, this little laptop can take the wear-and-tear of backpack workplace lifestyles.
Keeping your data safe is dTPM Encryption & a Match-On-Chip Fingerprint reader. And for those of you worried about someone hacking your webcam and snapping pics of you hard at work or otherwise, the Lenovo ThinkPad x280 features a ThinkShutter that slides over the camera when not in use. Display & Audio Beyond its Size
The 12.5" touchscreen display pumps out super sharp graphics. The touch digitizer is inline with the display which provides better energy efficiency and a matte appearance as opposed to a glossy look.
For a 12" business laptop, the Dolby Audio enhanced audio is louder than expected with a good clean signal and none of the tinniness that laptops usually produce. Combined with Lenovo's Vantage app users can change audio profiles to fit the usage.
Performance & Power
With its Core i7-8550U CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 512GB NVMe-PCIe SSD the x280 offers exceptional performance. With close to a dozen tabs open and MP3's downloading in the background there was no sign of lagging. The Lenovo ThinkPad x280's processing speed makes one wonder what they did before as tasks seem accomplished in fractions of the time on my previous machines.
One place the x280 could do a little better is in the battery's endurance. The x280 lasted just around 8 hours of solid use. So, it's not horrible but could definitely be better. Still, it's only 25-30 minutes shy of the average lifespan for the category.
Upgrades & Options
The base model lenovo ThinkPad x280 features a 1366 x 768 non-touch display, a Core i5-8250U CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. However, I recommend going to Lenovo.com and customizing your processor, storage & RAM. Also, it's worth upgrading to the 1920 x 1080 touchscreen display and a 256GB SSD.
