It’s that pesky time of year again when mosquitoes, ants, and other icky bugs are crawling around, all while you are just trying to entertain guest on your patio or backyard. This does not have to be the case, however.
There are multiple things we already know kind of work, such as citronella candles and bug spray that usually contains DEET, and chemical that is usually effective against insects, but harmful to you and especially any children that may be around. There are some simple alternatives that I have found useful, and it is known that I will share them with you.
First, you can make your own citronella lotion. Just go to a health market, find citronella oil, an organic and fragrance-free lotion, and sparingly use some droplets in the lotion, then apply liberally.
Not a fan of citronella? Well, I’m not really, either. Insects are also not the biggest fans of rosemary, and it smells way different. You can do the same with that. Other herbs you can use in a lotion or spray are cloves and cinnamon.
Insects also HATE coffee grounds. If you don’t mind your backyard smelling like a cafe, which I don’t mind at all myself, then make the simple and cheap investment in a couple cans of whatever strong coffee is available at the store you go to.
Second, there are things you can do aside from smothering lotions and oils all over yourself or make yourself look crazy to your neighbors and friends as you toss coffee everywhere.
This netting by Plow and hearth is very affordable and gives you and your guests plenty of room.
One is to make an investment in a bug net. Bug nets are used effectively and safely around the world as a great way to keep bugs away from wherever the action is taking place.
Something that we all know, but seem to forget, is that mosquitoes breed in standing water. If you are trying to have a party or BBQ the day after a heavy rain, it is important that you through dirt or sand in the areas that have not dried yet.
Yet another plant that insects hate is garlic. So aside from maybe planting some garlic bulbs surrounding the area you usually get together with friends, you can also make a marinade with a lot of garlic in it, and through whatever was marinated on the grill.
Third, there are some lesser-known facts about having people over or just hanging out by yourself in the backyard is that despite common belief, insects are actually active during the day, especially when it is more humid.
There are a variety of theories on why this is, but one is that the plants and birds that enjoy eating mosquitoes are nocturnal, which makes the nighttime more dangerous for them.
Speaking of which, did I mention birds? Birds probably responsible for killing and eating mosquitoes than any trick we have up our sleeve combined. Putting a dew nice bird feeder that has the right kind of food for the right kind of birds can save you a lot of time. Just don’t forget that bird baths have standing water in them, so make sure they are changed often.
There are many more tricks and anecdotes on how to get rid of pests. When it comes down to it, you should find what works best for you.
