Recipes: The Best Homemade Stuffed Cabbage Rolls!

Stuffed cabbage rolls are basically cooked cabbage leaves - wrapped around a filled - and cooked. This kind of dish is surprisingly enough - common to a bunch of different cuisines. 

What is Cabbage?

Cabbage is a leafy vegetable - that almost looks like a head of lettuce - and that is more commonly cooked, but can also be eaten raw.

Much like lettuces - there are a lot of different types of cabbage, including:

a) Red Cabbage

b) Choy Sum

c) Bok Choy

d) Savoy Cabbage

e) Cannonball Cabbage

f) January King Cabbage

g) Napa Cabbage

Cabbage is a low-calorie source for a lot of different minerals and vitamins. These include:

3. How Cabbage Affects your Health

Obviously - since it has so many nutrients - it is bound to be very healthy. But here are just a few of the incredible health benefits that cabbage has to offer. 

a) Prevents Inflammations

Cabbage contains a compound called Glutamine. This compound is responsible for reducing and preventing inflammations in joint pains and in various kinds of allergies and disorders. 

Also - due to a large amount of antioxidants present - cabbage also acts as a natural detoxifier.

Cancer eliminates the number of free radicals present in our bodies. These free radicals are the ones that are really bad for our health. Other compounds in cabbage also prevent the growth of certain cancers such as bladder and colon cancers.

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

In cuisine around the world - it is commonplace to make stuffing. 

Typically these stuffings are put into pieces of bread and other dough-based wrappings. 

Stuffed cabbage rolls on the other hand - are these same fillings - put into cabbage leaves. These rolls are then either fried, baked or steamed and served with a sauce. 

My favourite kinds of stuffed cabbage rolls are the ones that have a savoury - and spicy - filling. 

So here, I have included my favourite recipe for the perfect dinner meal!

What makes this recipe even better? It is so easy to make - and is pocket-friendly. So you could make this even on a tight budget. 

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

This recipe creates these delicious stuffed cabbage rolls that are crispy, juicy and coated with a luscious tomato sauce. It really is the perfect dinner - or anytime - recipe!

What You Need

a) For the Tomato Sauce

½ Cup Onion, chopped

2 Tbsp Garlic, chopped

250 Grams Tomatoes, boiled and chopped 

1 Tsp Cajun Spice

Salt and Pepper to taste

1/2 Cup, Red Wine

b) For the Cabbage Rolls

14 Cabbage Leaves, whole and untorn

230g - Minced Meat

1 Tbsp Garlic, minced

1 Tsp Cayenne Pepper

2 Tsp Parsley, chopped

1 Cup Onions, finely chopped

2 Eggs, beaten

Salt and Pepper to taste

1 Cup Chicken Broth

2 Tbsp Coriander, chopped

1/2 Cup Basmati Rice, cooked

1 Cup Mozzarella, grated

What You Need to Do

a) For the Tomato Sauce

1. First things first, prepare the tomato sauce. You will need to saute the onions and garlic till fragrant. Make sure that they do not burn. 

2. Add in the tomatoes, salt, pepper and cajun spice and allow it to simmer for 15 minutes. Do not break the tomatoes down too much - this sauce is best when it is a little chunky. 

3. Pour in the red wine and let this slowly simmer for about an hour. Once done, remove from heat and set aside. The sauce will thicken as it cools down.

b) For the Cabbage Rolls

1. Blanch the entire cabbage and quickly remove 14 large cabbage leaves. Make sure that these leaves are whole and unbroken. 

2. Allow these leaves to cool and remove any large parts of the stem. Make sure at this point that the leaves are completely clean. 

3. Combine all the other ingredients together in a large bowl. 

4. Now it is time to put the rolls together! Place an adequate amount of the stuffing into the centre of each cabbage leaf. 

5. Gently - but tightly - roll these leaves up and secure with a toothpick. 

6. Now that your stuffed cabbage rolls are ready - it is time to cook them! Place these rolls into a baking dish and spoon the tomato sauce on top and around them. 

7. Grate some cheese on top of the rolls and bake this in the oven for about half an hour at 200 degrees. Once they are done - remove the toothpicks and serve immediately. 

8. Serve these rolls with slices of bread, rice or even a fresh summer salad!

Tips and Tricks

1. A lot of recipes will tell you to freeze the cabbage first - or even freeze the rolls entirely before cooking them. I prefer not to do this because cabbage lets out a lot of water. So when frozen - and then defrosted, these stuffed cabbage rolls will come out soggy and the rolls will end up tearing. So not worth it!

2. If you do not have an oven - you can make these rolls on the stove. All you need to do is place the rolls into a wide bottomed pan with a lid - and slowly cook until the stuffing is ready. 

3. If you do end up with leftovers - store them in airtight boxes and consume the next day - but do not keep them for any longer.

Want to Make Some Changes?

1. Instead of the meat - you can substitute it with veggies of your choice! 

2. If you would like to make a keto-friendly or low-carb version, substitute the meat and rice with cauliflower rice and cheese!

3. If you have a lot of leftover cabbage (after you choose your 14 leaves) you can stir-fry - or even deep fry - the remaining cabbage and serve it on the side!

4. Not a fan of tomato sauce? Replace the tomato sauce with a pesto, curry or even a rich cheese sauce! 

5. If you would like a crunchy version of this dish - then coat the stuffed cabbage rolls with some cornflour and breadcrumbs and deep-fry the rolls. Serve them on the side with a sauce of your choice!

That is it! This dish is so incredibly versatile and delicious! It is perfect for any occasion and is easy and quick to prepare. I promise - you will not regret making these stuffed cabbage rolls for dinner tonight.
